This dark, rich, premium quality compost is made from recycled yard trimmings, dairy manure and horse manure. Nicasio Blend is recommended for applications that do not require high nitrogen content such as trees, shrubs, grape vines and natives. Or, for high nitrogen loving plants you can supplement nitrogen to meet the plant’s needs. –Click image to enlarge–
It provides valuable organic matter to soil, making it easier to work and more productive. In sandy soil it increases moisture-holding capacity, making soil nutrients more available to plants. In heavy clay soils, porosity is increased which improves aeration in the root zone and overall drainage.
Nicasio Blend provides a wealth of slow release nutrients and beneficial microbes to your soil and plants. It’s screened to approximately <1/2″. Also available bagged at various locations, see a list below.
Hi-Test Compost is great for new gardens and landscapes, especially where soils have been neglected or overworked. In addition to improving soil structure, our Hi-Test Compost will give new plants the nitrogen needed for a vibrant start.
Mallard Plus is great for clay soils and raised beds.
Hi-Test Living Biochar
The Hi-Test Compost was amended with biochar to have 15% biochar in the finished product. Since the biochar has been in contact with the Hi-Test Compost, the biochar is now fully charged with microbes. See below for further details on biochar.
An affordable, organic alternative to expensive bark products, Screened Vineyard Mulch provides great background color and texture in landscaping applications. It suppresses weeds, conserves moisture, moderates soil temperatures, and controls erosion.
Vineyard Mulch undergoes a brief composting process at over 131°F that renders it virtually free of weed seeds and plant pathogens. To activate the process water from a dairy manure pond was used. As it slowly breaks down, it provides the organic matter, nutrients and microbes that help plants thrive.
Worms thrive in soils that have a generous layer of Vineyard Mulch. Their tunneling activities allow oxygen to get to plant roots and their castings provide a beneficial nutrient input.
Fungi are prolific in mulches since they are working hard to break this material down. This fungal activity plays a crucial role in improving soil structure by aggregating the soil. Occasionally, during the wet season, these fungi make their presence known by producing fruiting bodies: mushrooms. This a natural occurrence, inherent to decomposition. For those who do not appreciate those ‘guests’ can simple rake the fungi and they will disappear rapidly.
It’s particularly suited for use on steep, hillsides and when properly applied will reduce soil loss from erosion by up to 95%.
It is derived from tree stumps and logs. An affordable, organic alternative to expensive bark products, screened Tree Mulch provides great background color and texture in landscaping applications. It suppresses weeds, conserves moisture, moderates soil temperatures, and controls erosion.
Tree mulch provides the same overall benefits to the soil as the Vineyard Mulch. Due to its woodier nature it will last longer, but provide less nutrients.
The hybrid mulch that has qualities of both compost and mulch will finish off any landscape just perfectly. Like any other mulch it stays on the surface of the soil and is not incorporated into the soil. While the mulch will initially act as a weed suppressant, as it breaks down it will help feed your soil. As the name implies, this mulch is lightweight and easy to work with. Landscapers specify Ultra-Light Mulch when a neat appearance or distinctive border is desired.
Path MulchThe economic, environment friendly substitute for expensive landscape barks. Made from recycled wood that’s ground and screened, Path Mulch is long-lasting walk-on mulch that will suppress weeds, conserve moisture and keep dirt and mud out of your house. It has a texture and color that work well with vivid garden colors. Landscapers specify Path Mulch when a neat appearance or distinctive border is desired.

Being made from recycled wood, even though we have an aggressive metal removal program, Path Mulch may contain an incidental number of nails. Recycled wood includes OSB and plywood. No pressure treated and painted wood is allowed. Please use in appropriate applications.
The Chip is an aged yard debris product. Made from recycled yard debris that is chipped and screened, The Chip is a long-lasting walk-on mulch that will suppress weeds, conserve moisture and keep dirt and mud out of your house. It has a texture and color that work well with vivid garden colors. The chip is used when a neat appearance or distinctive border is desired in an affordable way.
is a dark woody mulch that has gone through a full compost process. It provides the same benefits as Vineyard mulch or Blond Mulch, but will break down faster, since the compost process has impregnated the wood with fungi. As the mulch contains also some fines it will also provide some nutrients over time.
Plant directly into Amended Soil. It’s great for filling raised beds, replacing poor quality soil, adding elevation or leveling a project site, or filling in behind a retaining wall.
Amended Soil is a good looking blend of clean soil and a base compost. Since a high quality topsoil is used, rather than a mined soil, no weed-free guarantees can be made.
Biochar (or agrichar) is one of the products created when high-carbon materials such as forest bi-products are gasified under low oxygen conditions (pyrolysis). The process produces both syngas for green energy and biochar to be used as a soil amendment. Biochar is applied only once, but the results will last forever as long as you keep your soil biologically active. Annual applications of compost, mulch, cover crop, etc. will recharge the biochar over the years.
What does biochar do? It helps increase water-holding capacity, very helpful in sandy soils. It has a high adsorption capacity, capable of holding on to nutrients and possibly immobilizing heavy metals. It is a hotel for microorganisms, helping the soil microbial life to flourish, if we provide the populations through compost applications.
1 Cubic foot of Sonoma Biochar is applied to the surface of 48 square feet of soil. Cover the Biochar with a high quality compost and water well (we recommend 4 cubic feet of compost). Move the biochar and compost back and forth to make sure it all gets moist. This step will allow the water running through the biochar-compost mix to form a compost tea that can be absorbed by the Biochar, thereby ‘charging’ it. Next, work the compost and biochar into the top 8-12 inches of soil and water well. Allow the soil to come to equilibrium for a few days, continuing to irrigate regularly. Next, hold off on watering until the soil feels just moist, not wet or dry. You are now ready to plant.
Biochar is applied only once, but the results will last forever as long as you keep your soil biologically active. Annual applications of compost, mulch, cover crop, etc. will recharge the biochar over the years.
You have specific needs for oyster shell, greensand, worm castings, etc. to apply directly with your compost? West Marin Compost can make your custom blend. You may order the amendments from your supplier and have it delivered to West Marin Compost. A blending fee of $5.00 per finished cubic yard applies, minimum blending fee $25.00.
You can save labor and get a more even application of amendments when you blend them all together with your compost before application. With one application all of your amendments are in place.
Note: custom blends may only be fulfilled in the dry season weather permitting.
Please allow up to one week for us to prepare your blend from when you have the amendments delivered.
